Affordable Housing at Brooklyn Village

Legacy Real Estate Development, the affordable housing arm of the Peebles family, and Horizon Development Properties (the development arm of INLIVIAN, Charlotte’s housing authority) have formed a partnership to build 250 units of affordable housing at Brooklyn Village. This project will be the first element in the revival of Brooklyn, restoring affordable housing to a site that was once a thriving affordable community.

Brooklyn Village Affordable will be one of Charlotte’s highest opportunity affordable communities. With an array of unit types (studio, 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments) at a variety of income levels (30%, 50%, 60% and 80% of AMI), it will provide car-free access to Uptown’s thriving job market to low-income families, essential workers and a variety of vulnerable populations, including domestic abuse survivors.

Amenities at Brooklyn Village will be competitive with neighboring market rate developments, including a gym, coworking space, and extensive open space. Legacy is in discussions to provide additional amenities including a clinic. Brooklyn Village Affordable will be a community of active economic uplift, featuring credit building programs, an on-site case manager and wraparound supportive services (including financial literacy and substance abuse support) for extremely low income tenants.

Legacy Real Estate Development, a 100% Black-owned real estate development company, is committed to allocating at least 35% of its $103M development budget, approximately $36M, to M/WBE firms. Founded in 2016, Legacy, the affordable housing arm of The Peebles Family, focuses on high-quality affordable and workforce housing in underserved communities. With a pipeline of nearly 5,000 units in 10 markets across 6 states, Legacy emphasizes Public-Private Partnerships to tackle the affordable housing crisis.
