Proposed Plan
Following a competitive selection process, BK Partners LLC was appointed by the County as their partner in the redevelopment in June 2016. A community outreach process followed to hear from the community what its priorities and needs are and how a plan might be adjusted. After this, negotiations began with Mecklenburg County, resulting in a signed contract in December 2019 and the master plan below.
The residential component will include market-rate and workforce apartments for rent (indistinguishable from each other) as well as for-sale condominiums. Both for-sale homes and rental apartments will feature below-market offerings.
We are planning to develop an iconic office building and hotel along Stonewall Street to give a distinct sense of arrival to Uptown Charlotte and to help connect Midtown to Uptown.
Whilst both the South and North phases will feature a mix of uses, the majority of retail and restaurants will be located in Brooklyn Village North in a more walkable “village” environment and surrounding the park. We seek to provide a diverse mix of boutiques, stores and eating establishments and provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs to build businesses and flourish.
PUBLIC SPACE & ART
Brooklyn Village North will become an urban respite, organically anchored by park space and public art that will be curated through a series of outreach efforts and strategic partnerships with community organizations, local government, nonprofits, and other NGOs. Our tremendous focus on interpreting the history of Brooklyn through the arts and open space programming will also play a major role in bringing cultural elements to Brooklyn Village.
Myers Passage is an essential part of how Brooklyn Village North and South “communicate” with one another and an important reference to Brooklyn’s history. Myers Passage will lie on ground that was once Myers Street, home to Myers Street Elementary School at one time. Along Myers Passage you will find the Second Ward High School Gymnasium, one of only 4 buildings that remain from what was once a bustling ‘town’. Myers Passage also provides Charlotte with opportunities to translate the history of Brooklyn through art, installations, and other tools, while connecting the North and South sites to each other, to First Ward and beyond.
